Getting a job in the print media

I once said that “I’ll give up everything just to get a job related to my degree!”

IT’S more than just getting the job that you want, but doing what you love to do. Recently, I was called by the Atlas Publishing and was asked if I’m still opting for the editorial assistant job in a magazine. I was excited thinking that this might be an answered prayer that I’ve been waiting for quite a while now. I was having my morning sickness, when suddenly the sonorous voice of my dad filled the atmosphere “PAAAAAAUUUUULLLLLAAAAA!” he screams that of, THE USED vocalist mimicry.

Like a zombie I stood up, then he handed me the phone. My bedroom voice sounded tipsy since I’m in the state of composing myself. Then, the rest was history. The interview with the HR is less trepidating; a concoction of prosaic but courtly tete-a-tete. My answer on the questions that they throw in consists of white lies, to conceal my teaching stint because I badly want to get the job. As expected, t’was the final interview where I’ll have to do the deed. Honestly, I’m a complete ignorant with the proper use of Adobe PageMaker. The editor Ms. LOURDES FABIAN, made me seat on the mint green monobloc chair and made me edit articles sent by some writers.

Afterwards, she checked for corrections and told me that the important nature of this job preference is the keen to respell the typos and to restate the improperly used words. My situation appeared to be hopeless. Good thing that Adobe’s function was generalized and was adapted from Microsoft’s and being a writing buff myself, there are some buttons in and MS Word and Adobe that are alike. Successfully, I got her trust and was hired on the same day. At that time, I was in cloud nine thinking that finally a chance to make my dreams come true.

The next day thereafter, was training day. ANGELIKA, my former classmate from the mahiwagang sintang paaralan PUP was the former E.A. in this fanzine. However, her bags were already packed for resigning since the first week she decided to reside in this job. Imagine a record setter of one-week then give up toil tale. My eyebrows started to raise, and impish thoughts of Devil wears Prada, enigmatically filled my dubious mind.

She opened that she’s not happy with the job. It’s not because they treat her badly, but culture in this department as she puts in was like going to hell for a day. She says that since she’s a newbie, they think of her inferiorly and unprofessionally.

My first day consisted of meeting the staff, writers, creative directors, columnists and other editors as well. Some accepted me warmly as I presume, but some are hell of rotten tomatoes that stink to mega death, the type of braggarts that I don’t want to be associated with.

It’s not the reason why I dumped the job. I might sound to be a little choosy. I admit it but I don’t think I’ll be happy in this job too. Let’s remove the pressure factor. I think I can do well on that, but reading about ANN-SAM, KIM-GERALD, CARMEN-JERICHO, KC-RICHARD, ANGEL-PIOLO, BEA-LOYDIE, JUDAY-RYAN, and some other artists I don’t care about is just a pain in the ass. Plus, the fact that I’ll read all these for as long as I live makes me freaking’ puke. The hell do I care about this little icons.
